Our 15 year old exchange student from Lebanon has arrived and has started 11th grade at Winter Park High. She is charming and bright. Her religious practices are requiring some adjustments in our household life, but its all minor. She’s getting accustomed to our american diet, and is introducing some middle eastern fare to us. … Continue reading “Hiba is here”
Our Lebanese student is on her way. Sources report to us that she along with a whole batch of state department sponsored exchange students were airlifted out of Lebanon to Cyprus. They were restricted to a 15 kg luggage limit (about 33 lbs). She should arrive in Orlando via Washington DC as scheduled this coming … Continue reading “Hiba is on her way”
We watched this 2001 movie over the weekend (on our new Toshiba HD LCD monitor.) What a baffling movie, and a mixture of a bunch of different movie genres. It has a hugely surprising resolution which I don’t want to give away, except to say that this is most significantly a sci-fi movie. (The plot … Continue reading “Donnie Darko – Director’s Cut”
A new sitcom, coming this fall on the CW network! Its about a Pakistani exchange student in the American midwest. After the turkey trot, we helped Hiba with a bike lesson. After a few false starts, she wobbled in short stretches, then made it all the way around the block.
I did it again, and this time I had family company. Gina ran the holiday 5K along with one of her crew friends, Linda and Hiba walked it. I ran it and met Seth prior to the finish line (he’d already finished in competitive time). Seth crossed the finish line with me, and helped to … Continue reading “Turkey Trot II”
Early wednesday morning I did my normal 5K on the treadmill, then started a sunrise to sunset ramadan fast (no food or liquids). In the evening, Hiba (who has been fasting most of the last month) and I went to a iftar dinner “fast-a-thon” hosted by UCF’s Muslim Student Association. They specifically invited non-muslims who … Continue reading “Ramadan”
Bob, Linda, Hiba, Seth and Janice attended a Rockapella concert saturday night and it was terrific. Seth brought his pitch pipe, just – in – case. It turns out that most of the singers have roots or connections here in central florida, they’ve all worked at the theme parks at some time or another, and … Continue reading “Rockapella”
Here’s a photo of Hiba with her compatriots during their stay in Washington enroute to locations around the U.S. Hiba is in the blue hijab (head scarf) near the front of the group.
