Critical listening to old songs: Kind of Blue

Yesterday 8/17 was the 50th anniversary of the release of Miles Davis’ breakout LP “Kind of Blue”.  I never heard this album until just a few years ago (thanks Harold) and I liked it quite a bit.   However, on this anniversary Fred Kaplan wrote on Slate.com about why this album was so great and (dare I say it) game changing.   He discusses the context of the late 50’s jazz scene, and he also describes the breakthrough that was invented here.   Jazz at the time was improvisation built around sets of chord progressions.   Lots of room for creative improvisation, but it was reaching a dead end.   Davis and his cohorts came up with the modal approach, which opened up an entire new landscape of creative and collaborative improvisation.    I totally get it.   Listen to the most well known 1st cut from the album, and its quite clear.    Here’s a youtube version of it.

Cool!

Orlando’s Gesture

In 1958, the University of Buffalo football team was invited to the Tangerine Bowl in Orlando.  It was their first ever bowl invitation, but the team players voted and declined the invitation.   They declined because the invitation game with racist strings attached: the two black members of the team would not be allowed to participate.  The story has been featured on ESPN.

Next month, the UB Bulls are facing off against UCF in our own Bright House Stadium, and Orlando  Mayor Crotty has spearheaded an initiative to apologize and honor those 1958 team members for the stand they took.   The team members are invited to the September 19th UCF game.  Crotty has rounded up donated airfare and lodging for the players, and UCF will honor their attendance at halftime.   This story should not be buried in the sports pages.   Orlando Sentinel details. UCF News story.

Is this a troll?

This posting appeared today on the http://marcusiowa.blogspot.com/ discussion forum. The blog has been around for almost 5 years, and serves a group of fiercely proud small town Iowa folks and Iowa ex-pats.   It’s my dad’s hometown.

I find it hard to believe someone could be so clueless as to insult the town’s basketball team, and then disingenuously ask for help. What do you think?    Troll or no?    Give me your opinion in the comments.

Hey I am looking at moving to the Marcus area with some young boys. I want to know what sports your school is excelling at or in the near future will. From what I have heard your basketball team is absolutely horrendous, what is the football, wrestling, basketball, track, and baseball teams like? These boys want to go to a school that is competitive in sports and I want a good education for them actually I want both. I have looked at a few districts surrounding the Lemars area. Any help would be great.
